Usage notes[adiht]

  1. Hundred, thousand, million, billion, etc, are usually preceded by "one". This is often hyphenated in the case of the corresponding ordinals. Replacing "one" with "a" would be less formal. Some follow the usage of omitting the "one" entirely.
Examples: one thousand, one-thousandth, a thousand, a thousandth, the thousand, the thousandth, a one-thousandth, the one thousand, the one-thousandth
  2. The usage "thirty-one hundred" should be avoided in formal writing infavour of "three thousand one hundred".
  3. When spoken or written in words, the years from 1000 to 1999 are reckoned in hundreds. The word hundred was formerly included; nowadays it is uncommon and tends to be limited to legal, ceremonial and poetic contexts.
    Examples: ten sixty-six (1066); nineteen ninety-nine, nineteen-hundred ninety-nine or nineteen-hundred and ninety-nine (1999) (see note 3)
  4. In British and Canadian English, the numbers from "one" to "ninety-nine"" are predeeded by the word "and" when compounded with a higher number. In numbers over 100,999, this rule applies to each block of three numbers separated by commas. (Contrarily, in the US, some grade-school teachers specifically teach that this is improper.)
Examples: one hundred and one (101); a thousand and ninety-nine (1099); two million, four hundred and twelve thousand, three hundred and eight (2,412,308)
  5. In the US, the numbers billion, trillion, etc, refer to the ninth, twelfth, etc, powers of 10. In the UK they can refer to the twelfth, eighteenth, etc, powers, but the US system is now more common. The British and German system (powers 12, 18, etc) was once current in the US. Usage varies in other countries (see billion for more information). To avoid ambiguity numbers of such a size should be written with numerals.
