Main Page and Hēafodsīde

[adiht]

Halló! Is this an Old English Wiki? It's a fascinating language! I wonder if you could tell me what the Old English word for Interlingua would be? I'll put the translation on the Interlingua page.

Thank you! Matt 03:04, 26 Blōtmōnaþ 2006 (UTC)

  • Halló! The most wiki's have a redirect from Main Page to
MediaWiki:Mainpage {{MediaWiki:Mainpage}} == "Hēafodtramet" .

The word entries are a bit random, we should have some sort of standardisation for it. Maybe examples and how to make entries? It'll be helpful in the long run. --Timoði Pætricus Snīðer 02:14, 9 Solmōnaþ 2009 (UTC)

Usefulness?

[adiht]

Do you get many Angles, Saxons, or Jutes coming to this page? How about Mercians? Northumbrians? Do you want this Wiki to be useful to the general internet community who are looking for help with translations to Old English/Anglo-saxon? Because putting the whole interface in Old English, without some way to convert it easily into modern languages — particularly modern English — is not the way to do it. I came here to check some Old English translations I did on another website to see if they back translated into modern English the way I expected, and I was greeted by an interface in a dead language which I do not speak. How can I use this website to get the information I want if I can't read it. The questions I asked at the beginning are rhetorical, but germane. The first language Anglo-saxon speakers are long dead. A few linguists and philologists might speak Old English well enough to use an interface entirely in that language, but there won't be many of them. However many visitors this Wiki has, I'll wager that they are, like me, far from fluent, and are looking for fairly simple word meanings and translations. You begin the Wiki main page with: “Wilcume tō Wikiwordbēċ,” a statement of welcome even I recognise, but I don't feel welcome here. I feel like I’m on a page wanting useful translation information, but one that has been created by language snobs who are too good to allow riff-raff of the internet like me to use their site. Is that how you feel, or do you actually want a website that is useful for anyone on the internet wants to find definitions and translations of Anglo-saxon words for their purposes? It's up to you. If you don't want most people to be able to use your Wiki, you’re going about it the right way. If you want people to feel welcome and use your site productively, then please reexamine your format. Since I don’t think I’m wanted here, and, in any case, cannot get any productive use from your Wiki, I’ll be surfing on. Most others will too, but they won’t take the time to tell you about it. I’m sure I can determine whether blaec loða means “black cloak” somewhere on the internet. Please consider my comments. Thank you.

Gothic?

[adiht]

Why are there full Gothic entries in this dictionary? I mean we could link it over to the Gothic Wikitionary, but let's not keep it here. Also, I'm going to need some help with parts of speech names here.

A Question

[adiht]

Hi, just wondering how I should mark vowel-length in the titles of entries (I use á, é, í, ó, ú, etc, within the article because it's easier to write with alt codes than it is to click on whatever letter I need, but I think that we need to set it so that we may only use 1 kind of length mark for the names in dictionary entries to make it easier to search for words.) Gott wisst 04:03, 1 Sēremōnaþ 2009 (UTC)Reply

I think we are still using the - over vowels. It allows you to add it on the bottom part of wiki. --Timoði Pætricus Snīðer (talk) 13:49, 6 Hærfestmōnaþ 2012 (UTC)

New Entries

[adiht]

Check my entries on cyning, cild, etc for new entries. It'd be nice to straighten out this dictionary. --Timoði Pætricus Snīðer (talk) 15:45, 26 Winterfylleþ 2012 (UTC)

It's nice to see some renewed interest in projects like this! I agree that we should straighten out this dictionary. Unfortunately, there hasn't been much activity here for a long while. PiRSquared17 (talk) 20:24, 27 Winterfylleþ 2012 (UTC)

Request for Adminship Made

[adiht]

Hello, everyone.

I just made a request for adminship on this Wiktionary, and so I just wanted to make sure that it has a good chance of actually being seen.

See Wiktionary:Requests_for_adminship.

Thanks.

Espreon (talk) 22:20, 17 Mǣdmōnaþ 2013 (UTC)

If you want it to be seen, it might be better to mention it on ang.wikipedia too. Or have you? PiRSquared17 (talk) 23:23, 17 Mǣdmōnaþ 2013 (UTC)

Project Name and Namespaces

[adiht]

Hello, everyone.

I started a discussion on Wiciwordbōc's project name and its namespaces at Wikipǣdia. Note that I put it there since I mentioned things that concern both projects.

Wynn/W, Wiki/Wici, and *mōtung/*motung Equivalence in Namespace Names

[adiht]

Hello,

Yesterday, I put in two requests.

The first one would make variants of "Wikipǣdia:", "Wikipǣdiamōtung:", "Wikiwordbōc:", and "Wikiwordbōcmōtung" with wynn and c all valid aliases, thus, as byspel, "Wicipǣdia:", "Ƿicipǣdia:" and "Ƿikipǣdia:" would all be equivalent to "Wikipǣdia:". All requested variants can be seen by clicking the aforementioned link.

The second one would make *mōtung and *motung equivalent in the core namespace names, thus, as byspel, "Bysenmotung:" would be equivalent to "Bysenmōtung:".

Share your thoughts at Wikipǣdie if you wish to do so.

Thanks,

Wiciwordbōc or Wiciwordbēc???

[adiht]

The main page says Wiciwordbōc (single) on the left panel and Wiciwordbēc (plural) on the welcome box. WTF??? 188.163.86.117 16:46, 26 Hrēþmōnaþ 2016 (UTC)

That's Old English for you. The spelling is terribly inconsistent. Nloveladyallen (mōtung) 13:14, 17 Gēolmōnaþ 2017 (UTC)Reply
